This seems to be a somewhat controversial subject and I want to hear everyone's views, and maybe it will come to debate?
eh maybe not but let's try...

I find nothing wrong with online dating, as long as it is done responsibly, maturely, and carefully...

I find it dumb...very dumb....What's the point in dating if you are never going to see eachother?
I mean the person could be someone totally different then who you think they are....

That's why you ask to meet them somewhere after you've talked to them for more then 2 months...unless they're like..in a different state that's not close to you......then you plan ahead to meet them......

That's why when you ask to meet them they come and stab you and or rape you...
That's a dumb idea to meet someone off of the internet because like I said..they may not be the person that you think they are..

What about message board, friends in places such as these? I know some of my online friends are planning to meet each other next month.. I suppose it's almost a honor system. Sure, you can find someone's pictures and call them your own, or pretend to be someone you're not.. It's up to the other person to trust you or not believe you, and it's up to your to tell the truth (or in the other case, keep up the charade..)
It's both sided. As for dating, I dont care.

When you are dating someone you are supposed to spend time with them...not just talk to them over the computer....
The whole meeting up is risky....

That's why if you choose to meet someone you've met online, you bring people with you and mace.. Or beforehand, you ask them to take a picture of them with some weird message, like they did on the BMMB..
You very well could find the love of your life online, just like you can find the love of your life at first sight, or on the street, or in the supermarket, etc.. It may be more likely to fail because you could possibly live in different cities, states, provinces, countries, etc.. But, there is a chance that it could work out. Seriously.. Any relationship can work out with a little bit of sacrifice, love and loyalty..
As for the whole idea of dating online, I don't find it stupid at all. Whose to say you should only stick to meeting people around you. If you want to date online, you can go ahead and do it. If you don't want to, then don't. It's just that simple.
